The freight industry uses two kinds of weights:

The gross weight and the volume weight.

The gross weight is equivalent to the weight shown by a scale.
The volume weight consists of the size of a package and a volume coefficient and is calculated according to the following formula:

volume weight = Length x Width x Height / 5000

Beschreibung des Volumengewichtes

Transport costs are calculated on the basis of the higher weight.

A package of the size 40 cm x 30 cm x 50 cm (Length x Width x Height) and a gross weight of 6 kg.
1. Calculation of the volume: 40 cm x 30 cm x 50 cm = 60.000 cm3
2. Division of the volume by the volume coefficient 5.000
3. The volume weight is 12 kg.

In this case, the volume weight of the package (12 kg) is higher than its gross weight (6 kg). Therefore, the volume weight will be used to calculate the transport costs.
